Drowning D's
The Drowning D's - Dereliction, Disguise, Denial, Disbelief and Delay
Many factors lead to drowning, most of which are completely preventable. Lifeguards are human and thus subject to human error. It is critical to recognize how pool guests become drowning victims. Sometimes, a dereliction of duty, the most easily avoidable risk, can lead to neglecting a drowning victim. However, other, less obvious factors are at play and are more difficult to recognize and eliminate. This includes disguise and disbelief, which also leads to denial. Many guards delay and even freeze when an emergency happens.
